New Funding Improves Food Quality

In December 2023, The N.C. General Assembly appropriated $10 million to Golden LEAF for the Food Distribution Assistance Program. This program is funded by federal State Fiscal Recovery Funds through the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Christians United Outreach Center of Lee County was awarded $100,330 for a walkin/roll in freezer, lift table, electric pallet jack, shelving, rolling food carts, box truck, and electrical upfit.

These improvements drastically improves the level of service we can provide to our neighbors in need.

New Growth, Thanks to Grant Funding

Feeding the community requires ingenuity and resourcefulness, and Christians United Outreach Center of Lee County is always looking for new ways to make food accessible. Food pantries rely on fresh produce, grocery store donations and extras gleaned from local farms. In winter months, that can mean a scarcity of nutritious greens. To combat the problem, we started hydroponic farming with grow lights.

Having nutritious options available to the nearly 800 families we serve each month is important. Vegetables should make up about half of your plate at each meal, since they are packed with vitamins, antioxidants and fiber. Often, vegetables are much more expensive than a can of soup or a bag of chips. We want to change the way Lee
County eats. "We use this as an opportunity to provide new flavors and foods that our community might not otherwise taste." says Executive Director, Teresa Dew Kelly. Fork Farms, Inc. hydroponic towers can grow fresh produce every day of the year, without the concerns of pests, frost or drought. Our facility has four units that can hold 277 plants each. This project was made possible by grants from United Healthcare and Pfizer.
